If there is an information update that we need to publish it will be in the manual section. Information updates supersede information contained within the manual. They are addendums to the manual that we publish instead of releasing a new manual.
There is an information update regarding series CPU support. We have not sold 11th generation servers for a few years. I would not expect any new CPU support beyond what is already available.
I've looked at this pdf file, which shows a list of supported processors. I would also like to add that the link you have provided I couldn't find a manual that tells me about supported processors. I have seen other Forums that claim as long as its a Intel and its the correct model.
You can get other versions to work. I assume Dells Supported CPU specs, just means to state that this is what they support and that is all they want of it. Which makes sense. Both are the same site. However, the second link clearly shows the R Server being support by the Rs.
Considering the 90s vs the 80s have the same power consumption. However, I wish I could find a good site that had more info so I could buy something newer with confidence. I have the "X 2. Although I just purchased from ebay, the "X 3. To Upgrade the Servers performance. Next to having all the RAM slots Maxed out. I am probably going to purchase the 90 from ebay used anyway to see if it works. And return the one that turns out to be the lesser of the two options. Browse Community.

Intel Xeon xRecently bought PE R and it appears to be Gen. As far as I understant, considering its Gen. Is that correct? Current BIOS version is 6. Go to Solution. Yes, the first generation board does have limited support for nonw series Westmere CPUs. The information I provided previously was not accurate.
There is a processor information update in the documentation section of the R support page. It has more detailed information.
View solution in original post. Yes, that is a first generation system board. The system supports series Nehalem CPUs. I'm pretty sure some people on reddit did it too. I have an R with 2 x processors. I run Vmware on it in my lab at home. I recently upgraded to Vmware 6. Is it possible to upgrade the CPU to something that will be supported or do I need to find another server entirely?

Daniel, I have an R with 2 x processors. Thanks, Kevin. Dell Support Resources.I want to utilize this machine more. I was looking at 4 x 8GB modules. My questions are as follows. I am not trying to spend your money but RAM is Cheap and the extra 2 sticks will help! Populate the RAM exactly as the manual specifies Startech Business Systems Ltd.
You can you any other combination but it will not perform as well. Is 4x8GB sticks with 2 processors a optimal configuration? A1,A2 on the one side and B1,B2 on the other. So that is what I'm trying to understand.Miui 12 theme for miui 11
If that is the case then 4 x8GB would not be optimal? I'd want to step up to 6 x 8GB for an optimal configuration?
I really don't understand there manual. That makes a lot of sense now based on what I'm reading. From your post I'd gather that running 6 sticks in Memory Optimized Mode will give me the best performance. The 4 sticks could be setup for better ECC. How about this memory mirroring? That seems to be another optional setup for the 4 sticks instead of Advanced ECC mode.
I'm not aware of what advantage that provides though. Currently has R2 on it. Thinking about using hyper-v and moving it to a guest VM. Then add more guests. One thing that has been missed here is that there are really two versions of the R motherboard as we found out in trying to upgrade the RAM and CPU on some of ours. So, the 2 X's and 6x8GB of ram worked. Sorry about the necro post. But I'm answering the second item in case someone else comes across this in an internet search like I did.
What I found through research is that this 11th generation of servers does not stack the total capacity of the installed PSUs. So 2 x W does not equal W. You're still only getting W.
So we had to replace the PSUs with 2 x W the second for redundancy. So 2 x W would yield W total. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.Designed for industry-leading performance and maximum energy efficiency, the Intel Xeon processor sequence delivers versatile one-way and two-way bit multi-core servers and workstations that are ideally suited for a wide range of infrastructure, cloud, high-density, and high-performance computing HPC applications.
The Intel Xeon processor series offers up to nine times faster performance over single-core servers. It automatically places CPUs and memory into an optimal power state for maximum performance, while reducing energy use over single-core servers. Users can also mix different generations of Intel Xeon processors within the same pool, achieving a server consolidation ratio, while reducing operating costs up to 90 percent, resulting in an estimated eight month ROI.
Selective processors in the Intel Xeon series also support Turbo Mode. Turbo Mode is an OS-controlled operation that automatically allows the processor to run faster than the marked frequency if the processor is operating below power, temperature, and current limits. Unless otherwise noted, processors have been tested and removed from working servers and are backed by our day parts replacement warranty.

I've seen evidence that many of the 56xx series CPU's are still allowing upgrades, despite a warning being presented. I was unable to use VUM for the upgrade as it presented an incompatible error message.
There is peace in the lab once again.
If you are looking to the 11g generation of servers; ensure you are getting CPUs that the community has validated are still working. Many of the 56xx series appear to be functional - specifically the L in my case, or X in Brian Graf's case. Update - Updated to reflect leveraging software profile update instead of software vib install command. Firstas of now, the most success has been had with 56xx series Westmere processors.

Lastlythese CPU's are largely throwing warnings about functionality ending soon. The release notes indicate that upgrades are going to be disallowed. It's happening. Move past the denial. It's a pretty common understanding in the homelab community that R's and DL G6's are some of the most well-rounded hardware you can get. They are enterprise grade, so you can make yourself feel like you are running a real datacenter. So what happens when that hardware just gets too old to remain supportable?
Purple screens of death. That's what. Children crying in the streets. Shattered dreams. Last week, vSphere and subsequently vCenter 6. I don't want to get into the weeds on all of the new features - but it's absolutely a must have upgrade. A few great blog posts around the release are below:. Tucked into the release notes for vSphere 6. This list effectively covers many of the popular 11th generation 11g of CPU's.
In past versions, we would receive a nag message that was able to be bypassed. This was different treatment entirely. Many of us started researching the availability of r's as a replacement kit for the homelab - however were very unhappy to find the cost to upgrade was substantial. The problem was, there wasn't enough chatter to feel confident one way or another.
